Infineon Technologies Austria AG (IFAT) is a 100% subsidiary company of the worldwide operating semiconductor producer Infineon Technologies AG and was founded in April 1999. Infineon designs, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of semiconductors and system solutions. The focus of its activities is on automotive electronics, industrial electronics, communication and information technologies, and hardware-based security. Chips from Infineon play an essential role wherever electric energy is generated, transmitted and used efficiently.
In Austria about 1,550 of 3,780 employees are working in the field of “Research and Development”. Hence, IFAT has the biggest R&D unit for microelectronics in Austria. This requires a high level of comprehensive technology know-how in modeling, design and fabrication. Furthermore, IFAT submits ~200 initial patent applications per year. IFAT has five sites: Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz, Linz and Vienna. In the year 2017 expenses of IFAT in the field of “Research & Development” were ~428 million Euros, which corresponds to nearly 17% of the business volume of 2,539 million Euros.
Villach is the innovation center of power electronics at Infineon. Furthermore, the site provides the Pilot Space Industry 4.0, which is an innovative concept of networked and knowledge-intensive manufacturing in terms of smart production.

Role
Infineon Technologies Austria is not only the overall coordinator of the publically funded iDev40 project, but also contributes to the innovative and technical progress of the project. The company brings in the expertise of the center of competence in innovation of power semiconductor devices across the whole value chain. Furthermore, it will strengthen and develop competences for the digitized environment. Moreover, IFAT will contribute with new devices for the envisioned demonstrators.
Key Contribution
- IFAT will act as overall project coordinator and project manager in the iDev40 project
- IFAT is task leader in different WPs and WP leader of WP5 and WP6
- IFAT will contribute with the scientific advancements reached during the projects (EPPL, eRamp, PowerBase, Productive40 and SemI40) especially in the terms of Industry 4.0
- IFAT provides a Fab for industrial demonstration in production environment for iDev40.
